- A list of self-actualizing questions
The first process we will be looking at is the Intervene - Explore – Discover – Engage process. This is a simple process to always identify what resources you need, find these resources and create access to these resources for yourself.
Victor Frankl chose to live self-actualized when all basic needs were absent; he was able to do this because of knowledge. The “scary” African bush could be fun, if you had the right knowledge.
Practice to process information to the benefit of yourself and others. Take a moment before reacting to a remark or challenge; ask yourself how to handle the situation to the benefit of yourself and the other person. By doing this you set the stage for amazing personal growth and growth in your relationships.
What makes us go and what stops us? Be aware of these influences to react self-actualized. When you decide to change things, change incrementally, big sudden change is seldom good.
The self-actualize check-list. A list of questions we regularly go through to measure our growth, write down your own answers and identify a list of action steps. It is always good to do this in a group or at least with one other trusted person.
Explore – Discover – Engage toward self actualization
-
Intervene - Explore – Discover – Engage is a process to think through and identify what you need, to then discover the right sources of knowledge then create access to and engage with these sources of knowledge.
-
Intervene – Intervention comes from many places. Desire is the key driver and thoughts are the key driver for desires. Choose your thoughts. Commit with another person or imaginary person to follow the processes. An intervention just happened. Now you are ready for action with your chosen real or imaginary person.
-
Explore – In the exploration phase, you think though “stuff” and ask yourself questions. You challenge yourself. It will be very good to this with a friend. Ask yourself or let a friend ask the following questions, I have made it applicable to a career, but you can swap career with anything:
HOW you enjoy doing things - Look back and ask how you enjoyed doing activities in what, with whom, where, etc. Think of recent past, school, sport and family or hobbies. Focus your mind so it can work for you.
What you do is simply a function of growth industry first and personal interests second. Go onto the web and discover where you apply your how in a growth industry.
What can you do with your career? Earn how much by when. Do what for and with whom by when? Where do I want to do this? Now find real businesses doing what overlaps with you. Create new jobs with our exercises. Now you know what you want from your career.
Where can you be in five years? It is a result of your choices right now. Know more to choose and earn more. Make the choices.
Who do you choose to work with? Do you even know them or must you go find those right people? You now choose who you work with, which company and which people?
Grow competencies by choosing exercises. Grow personal skills to grow and develop my talents?
Expand my choices by the creative and lateral thinking processes and exercises offered by ebio from Aleph Synergy. I change the things I want to change in my career.
See my footprint from my implementation how do I enjoy doing things, where with whom and earn what I want to. I am having fun in my career.
-
Discover –The discovery processes are simply a treasure hunt. All may ever require already exists. You identify people with access to opportunities, resources and knowledge to achieve what you have identified in the exploration phase. A good place to start is the internet. Ezines, magazines, industry association, white papers, etc. work very well. Let’s say you realized you need to broaden your career horizons into astronomy, you would go to Google, type in the words “astronomy” and “white paper” and start your search there. Then find the words you enjoy and look up synonyms in free dictionaries. Let your intuition drive you with a choice from the large expanded exposure. You let your intuition drive your discoveries.
-
Books are also excellent sources of knowledge. The only trick with books is you need to know which book to buy. If you have access to experts in the field or topic you are interested in, ask them which books to buy. Or use the internet to find experts in that field and buy their books.
-
If, for example, you have decided you need to change companies, but do not know where you would like to go, use the explore process to pinpoint what you are looking for in a company and then go search for those companies, again the internet is a good place to start.
-
Use the existing company to grow competencies by delegating what you do not enjoy and volunteer for what you enjoy doing. Your job will have changed already since you have a plan. Everybody likes people with a plan.
-
We will be going through a step-by-step process in follow-up emails in our “Maslow and living Self-actualized” series. This article is to give you a broad understanding, introduce you to the different concepts and start of with small exercises to put the process in gear.
-
Engage – You know how you enjoy doing things. You chose the starting or entry point for all the new experiences in your life. Communicate, organize and mobilize to get moving. The movement opens up choices and actions. You are moving and growing. An example could be a change in companies. Outcome may mean that you aim to work with a specific company, a company you have identified as one you would really enjoy working with. Identify a person in the company that’s closest to what you want to do and start communicating with them. If you would like to get the expertise from an expert, thank them and be specific. For example, if they published an article on the web, thank the expert for what you gained from the article. And start informing them on your growth and how what that expert did and is doing makes a difference to your future. Be sensitive, don’t send too many emails, quality is what counts, not quantity.
-
In follow-up emails we will delve into this process in more depth. If you have not yet signed up for the Alephsynergy Career Development “Maslow and living Self-actualized” series, sign up here! We build on the concepts in this article and focus on the practical application of each.
Applying the open Maslow pyramid, learning from Victor Frankl and the African bush
What you think is who you are. Viktor Frankl knew this and chose how he thought and what he thought, even when he was in the most extreme of conditions. Being jungle savvy will keep you alive, in the real jungle of live. Twinkle and breathe during your day to stay relaxed and focused on the right stuff.
Always act in your best interest under any circumstance.
Do this quick Twinkle and Breathe exercise:
-
Sit or stand with your back nice and straight.
-
Move your fingers and toes and feel control shift to your rational brain.
-
Now take a deep breath and hold it for ten seconds. Breathe out slowly and take 10 normal small breaths repeat both processes five times.
-
Simply be in charge of your brain and body to make good rational choices in your own best interest at all times.
-
Repeat the processes to keep the body serving the brain for productive choices and your actions. Do it before meeting people, calling people, when you sit down to work or on an hourly break during the day
You can work more, play more and have much more fun. Most stress related diseases could not get you since you stay relaxed and do more. |
Breathe, twinkle and wiggle. See the Walk and Talk guide as well as motivation on Wikipedia and look at how people are differently motivated. We believe what comes into your mind drives your desires and fears. Your desires and fears drive your actions. Actions leads to habits and habits lead to character or who you are, what you value and what you believe. It matters how you allow stuff to come into your mind, it drives what you think. This is an awesome thing, to know you have the power to choose and it is the building blocks of who you are and what you become. Choose carefully what you allow into your mind.
Others did it and are doing it. It works. Viktor Frankl could process his thoughts under the worst circumstance.
A thought process exercise:
(You are confronted with a challenging situation or statements at work.) (Remember the Games People Play and Transaction analysis from Eric Berne)
-
STOP! Don’t answer or react immediately, but always inform the other person or group with what you observe, perceived facts, feelings and thoughts.
-
Say, “Just give me a moment; let me gather my thoughts.”
-
Now think about the answer that will benefit all in that specific situation. You can use the list of processes and questions in the last chapter to help.
-
Attempt to understand, in terms of whole communication, what is meant or what drives the statement. It is never personal. It is always perceptions. Defense and attack are the enemies of growth and relationships.
-
Acting defensively won’t help either, rather get more information through questions, last chapter question list.
-
Ensure you have as much information as possible before suggesting a solution.
-
Run through a compressed version of Explore – Discover – Engage in your mind.

We live in Africa and find great inspiration from African nature. A colleague of us created an unforgettable experience anybody can be a part of:
A lesson from Africa, Callie’s bush workshops are great fun and you get to know the deep African bush in safety. You learn what it means to be in the wild and interact self-actualized with your environment. What you learn on this adventure you can apply as-is in your career or business. Career changers will find great value from these camps with Callie. You can read more about this amazing experience on his website.
Align yourself with what you want and the brain will process what you give it, you are what you think, your mind will naturally align with the information you allow it to process. As in the African bush, know how to find food, keep direction, avoid and learn from the animals. Understand the habits and nature of lions, leopards, hyenas and you will survive in the bush. The same applies to the bush of life. What are your lions, leopards, hyenas, where will you find food and how will you keep direction?
Process information to the benefit of yourself and others
Choose to process information in a positive way.
Learn to process information effectively. Acquire this skill in a group or at least with another person. We were meant to work with people.
Useful tools and exercise to process emotions from interaction with Issue is models to act in own best interest at most times.
Useful process to seek information and experiences by search, find and engage.
Exercise to live and experience being self-actualized.
Here is a list of useful tools to help you process information more effectively and make better choices because you have easy access to the right information:
-
Getting Things Done and Outlook
-
Use the free tools on the web to get going, usually people with less money have more time, those with less time have more money. It will be better to buy the CD, but you can get far with the free tools available on the web.
You process information, which leads to a choice which leads to an action which has an action to effect which forms your character and the world you live in. Viola, you experience self-actualization.
What makes us go and what stops us, be aware and change incrementally
What makes you go in your career or business? The human is a goal driven being, we need a goal to aim for and go for; a goal that is communicated, meaning the individuals you see as part of the plan should be adequately informed. To achieve the goal we need to know enough about the goal, have experience in that area and have access to resources to achieve this goal. Having these things in place will make taking action and achieving the goal fun! Think of times when you did something fun? Why not do it more often?
What often times stops us is to say or think:
When…then…
If…then…
Why always me?
They will…
If only I had time… What about right now
If only I had money and resources… Saying thank you
If only they would do something… How about doing something for them and saying thank you
If only I can be organized… And stay organized
If only they knew about me… How about telling them
Why does this always happen to me… How about turning it into value for you
To overcome possible barriers between you, taking action and achieving your goal we strongly recommend a process called SHIP. This process was developed and is maturing every day, by a well known South African psychologist – Jo Steenkamp. Have a look at his website… We will send a summarized version of this process, with Jo’s permission, in follow-up emails. If you are not signed up for the Alephsynergy Career Development “Maslow and living Self-actualized” series, you can sign up here…
When you are successful, rich, etcetera, you have choices and can live with enormous convenience. If you are not yet successful and rich you have choice without convenience. Forbes was simply the richest man in the world for quite a while. He started Forbes magazine, etc. You were born with unique talents and passions. Your behavior makes you self-actualized and your behavior find their origin in your choices.
You have Intrinsic Assets. These can be developed or not then starting exercises differ and the results are the same in the end.
All exercises are valuable to you and others since we always grow with others. In Africa we believe “Umuntu ngu Muntu nga Buntu”. On the web connect and find exact meaning please. (I only am because others are.)
We are used to the safety of the extended family. We are also in many ways limited by this same family and friends. We learn many great things from our family and friends. When you go through the Intervene - Explore – Discover – Engage process and you realize you need knowledge that you will not find in the current circle of family, friends and colleagues, identify and engage with new groups and communities. Bring the experiences carefully to your family and grow with your family. The same applies to the following:
-
Your needs and your customers, does your current customer satisfy the growth needs of the business?
-
Your needs and career growth, what is your career goals and will you achieve them on your current road?
-
Your needs and career change, do you need to incrementally start making a change?
Why cope when you can thrive!
To naturally act in the best interest of yourself and those around you takes time and exercise. There are individuals who are naturally more inclined to act this way, we can learn hugely from them. Use the exercises in this article to practice interacting with the world around you in a self-actualized manner. What stops us from learning and growing is the unknown and our fear of this unknown. Surround yourself with selected mentors and guides to help you understand this “unknown”. Don’t let fear stop you from growing.
When a great opportunity crosses your path, the excitement of the opportunity can be overwhelming. Again this is just fear of the unknown. Questions like, “What if I…? What if they…?” cross our minds constantly. Identify individuals that have been there and make the unknown, known and the fear will vanish.

We apply a few different models and processes:
A list of questions:
- Do I have enough information concerning this situation to handle the challenge self-actualized?
- Who can I talk to and where can I look to gather more information?
- What else can be done, asked, implemented, what other alternatives do I have?
- How can I cause a win-win solution from this situation?
- Who can help me make the unknown, known?
An example of living self-actualized even though the lower levels of the pyramid are not present in the individuals’ life:
Skip is the HR director of a large technology company, Bytes Technology Group. The company sometimes takes groups of young people through the company to explain the inner workings of the company. Black culture teaches that one should not challenge a superior. One of the black youngsters went out of cultural character and asked Skip challenging questions – he was from a rural school. Because this youngster asked self-actualized questions, in spite of the fact that many of the lower levels of the Maslow Pyramid is missing in his life, Skip is now considering giving him a job as a learnership. He acted out of the box. He acted at a high intellectual self-actualized level instead of acting in the “traditional” way – waiting for someone to offer him a job. Begin thinking from the top down – engage the resources you need, survive and learn.
Learn to ask strategic questions about strategic content when you have selected the company you want to work with, or within your current company and you will get access to the decision makers.
Developing insights and resources to what Maslow did for continuous self-actualization (conclusion)
Hertzberg, Graves and many others are expanding the horizon and our understanding of self-actualization. We want to incrementally be a part of your journey in becoming more and more self actualized.
The lions roar and the hyenas are laughing, but you smile and snuggle closer to the fire, because you know in the savanna of life they are not laughing or roaring at you, they are afraid of you. The flames of your fire burns hot and on the side, your smoldering coals are roasting a juicy rump. You have the knowledge to survive and you are not afraid to expand your knowledge into the unknown.
Your action are determined by your state of mind
